By definition we are blindsided when we are struck by something that is not in our sight. Simply put, when we get hammered by the unexpected.

From a career perspective it is defined by a shift in our environment that forces a situation of change that we did not expect and most likely we were not prepared for. It just happens. You probably know someone in that situation now and there is a strong chance you have probably been there yourself.
